Who is Professor Buzzkill?
In real life, “Professor Buzzkill” is Dr. Joseph Coohill, a historian of Britain and Ireland. While studying modern history at Oxford, Coohill hosted “The History Show” on Oxford Student radio, which had the memorable tagline, “listen to doctoral students talk about dead people.” Lasting almost four episodes, “The History Show” was an instant failure and Coohill feels shame. In addition to his Oxford doctorate, Coohill has an MA in history from the University of Melbourne (where he was a big fan of Essendon Aussie Rules Football Club) and a BA from Humboldt State University in California (where was the only non-stoner). He is the author of Ideas of the Liberal Party and Ireland: a Short History (5 editions), as well as many press articles and internet pieces on history.
Coohill is a “Historian for the Public.” He works tirelessly to explain complicated yet compelling historical analyses to diverse audiences. He often speaks to civic, government, non-profit, and business organizations about the nature of history and about how historical misunderstandings and mythology hurts public discourse and policy decisions. He offers clear and concise solutions to such problems, using examples from history. Among his most popular talks are “Churchill Leadership Myths vs. Churchill Leadership Reality: Lessons for Business and Organizations” and “New Sh*t Has Come to Light! The Value of Genuine Historical Revisionism.”
